Groningen Airport Eelde (IATA: GRQICAO: EHGG) is a civilian airport near Eelde, in the northeastern Netherlands. It is 4.8 NM (8.9 km; 5.5 mi) south of the city of Groningen.[1]

Though there are several scheduled services operating from the airport the majority of operations at the airport mostly comprise charter flights to holiday destinations in Greece, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. In 2008, the airport handled 190,034 passengers. The airport is also the homebase of the KLM Flight Academy, Dutch Flight Academy (DFA), Noord Nederlandse Aero Club (NNAC) and Stella Aviation.

History

The airport was officially opened on May 23, 1931 by mayor Jan Gerard Legro. Legro announced at the opening that it would grow into "an airport for the entire North region". During the opening there was an air show which was attended by 40,000 spectators.

On August 15, 1931 a scheduled flight between Eelde and Schiphol was launched, but it did not prove successful. In 1933 the airport's name was changed into NV Luchthaven Eelde.

On May 1, 2003 Ryanair began daily flights from London Stansted this service ended on April 28th 2004 just under 12 months of service.

Runways

Groningen Airport Eelde has two asphalt paved runways. Runway 05/23 measures 1,800 × 45 m (5,906 × 148 ft) and is planned to be extended to 2500 meters. Runway 01/19 is shorter, measuring 1,500 × 45 m (4,921 × 148 ft).
